Do you have a box of old door handles and cabinet doors that were too pretty to throw away, a silk scarf with a sentiment attached to it, or maybe some leftover wallpaper from a few years ago and wooden pieces from your renovation last year that you thought you’d use later? A box full of junk or a box full of opportunity? This month, why not use all those extra bits and pieces that you didn’t have the heart to throw!
Start by organizing all the pieces. Keep aside wooden blocks, door handles, old cabinet or shelf doors. Throw away any extra screws that have rusted or tools that are beyond repair. Next, go buy some fresh paint, choose bright colours that you prefer and also some basics to fill in the spaces. Have a pair of gloves handy as some work that you do may get a little messy.
All those beautiful silk scarves, cute duppattas that you don’t know where to use? Match the colours and stitch pillow covers for your small cushions. They make unique and colourful cushion covers and add a special touch to your home.
If you have any long wooden boards, cut them into equal pieces and file the edges so that they aren’t too sharp. Choose a colour that you like and paint a fresh coat of paint on it and let it dry. You can either drill screws onto it or super glue the old door knobs in a line on the board, and voila! You have your very own hanger that you can put in your room to hang scarves, belts and jackets.
Need to add a bit of style to your boring old bedside table? Use some of your wallpaper on the edges and paint the rest of it a matching colour. Almost as good as new and it even has a beautiful lining of wallpaper on it! Make sure you clear your table and clean it once before you do this for a neat job.
The old cabinet doors without hinges that desperately need some dusting? Take them out dust them, clean them and put a fresh coat of paint on them. Once they’re dry, notch the back of each shelf to accommodate the hardware. Using wood supports attach the shelves to the wall and for extra support you can attach a metal chain too. These are called floating shelves and not only look very aesthetic in your living room but can also be used as a bookshelf or just a place to display photos and trophies.
So what are you waiting for? Make use of all those beautiful old wooden boards and scarves and revamp your house with some new and unique home decor!
